Match between the computer chess programm
Hydra against Grandmaster
Christopher Lutz.
To develop a chess program that plays stronger than every human Grandmaster or World Champion is the aim of the Hydra Project. Since end of 2003 Hydra is founded by the PAL Computer Systems Group in Abu Dhabi (United Arabic Emirates) which brought together an international team of developers. A breakthrough was achieved by beating Michael Adams in London in 2005.
Computer chess is one topic in the research group of Prof. Dr. Burkhard Monien, searching for new and better optimization algorithms. Chess is only one application, but surely one of the most famous ones. Thus the strength of hydra reflects the success in this research area.
According to the authors, Hydra is the only chess system that reaches an ELO number of more than 3000. The best human player, Gary Kasparow, has an ELO of 2812. So Hydra plays yet 1 to 2 categories stronger than all human beeings.
