The library
The Libary
The library holds more than 1.3 million books and around 3.200 journals and periodicals. The library can obtain literature from home and abroad via the inter-library loan system. Plenty of computers are also available for Internet research and e-mailing. An international study recently carried out by Gerhard Reichmann, who compared 118 libraries, placed Paderborn 12th best, even ahead of American elite universities, such as Princeton, Yale and Stanford.

Center for Information and Mediatechnology
Using the internet within the university is for every student free. Every student can receive a user name and a password. After registration you can use the Internet with your own Notebook or you use the computer rooms.
Meals and Refreshments
Cafeteria
You like foodcourts? You'll love our mensa. Renovated in 2004, it offers a variety of different flavours from all over the world, including Asian and Italian, while still providing three different 'standard' meals for around three Euros. You can choose between the student cafeteria, the Pizzeria, the Cafeté oder the Gowman´s Pub. The cafeteria serves snacks, cakes, sandwiches and hot drinks. There is plenty of space and a study area for students who wish or have to do some work between lectures. The Gownsman is an Irish pub. It is very popular with students and sells good meals and cheap drinks. It has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and is open 7 days a week, often until 1am.
Student Life
The University orchestra
We're students, right? So we don't want to study all day. There are several groups, organizations and facilities in and around the university, where you can enjoy yourself. A few of them are listed here:
The theatre group
The theatre group Studiobüne is one of the oldest student drama organisations at a German university and being regulars in the cultural life at the University of Paderborn. The program ist created by students and professors. In every semester theatre-science and theater-practice seminaries are offered. The group stages public theatre production for an audience from the university and the region.
Cinema "Lichtblick"
An other cultural constitution ist the program cinema „Lichtblick“, which with weekly presented public performances the cinema cultur of the city expanded und the sense of filmhistory offers.
All about music
The campus radio L´UniCo, the university orchestra, the University Orchestra, the Chamber Music Group, the Big Band, and the Brass Band rehearse in workshops and practice sessions. Many festivals at the university are accompanied by the University Orchestra with pieces from the 18th to 20th century. The Chamber Music Group rehearses chamber music in smaller ensembles. The Big Band plays arrangements from traditional to modern jazz. The Brass Band performs old and new pieces of wind music.
AStA Parties
Besides many parties of the student union the AstA organized the very popular summerfestival und at the beginnig of the winter semester the “Schnüffelparty”. The summer festival is one of the biggest party of germany und take place at the end of the summer semester.
Sport Facilities
The University Sport Office (Hochschulsport-Büro "Mensatreff", Room MEO.215) organizes sports and games in more than 60 sporting disciplines including general fitness courses, all sorts of games and more. All these courses cost very little or nothing, just have a look here:
